Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is how well your business website shows up organically when others are typing in questions and queries into search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing.  SEO is not how well your pay per click (PPC) campaign is working nor does it necessarily mean how well you show up in local 3 pack map listings as you search.  What it means is where your website shows up under both sponsored ads and the local 3-pack map.  Is our website found on page 1, page 2 or nowhere to be seen in the first 10 pages of a search?

The better your website and various online channels are optimized the better your website will show up on search engines more favorably.  People trust first page rankings. When we are traveling and we are searching for local restaurants to eat at, do we look for the top sponsored PPC listing in a Google search, or do we look at the local map to see what pops up and read some reviews?  The answer for that particular search is we look at the map more often.  That said, when it comes to a more important or specialized product or service search, most people look below sponsored adds as well as the local map listings and start clicking on websites. 

SEO is not an overnight, flip of the switch strategy.  It needs to be done right so that we are connecting all our online components using best practice strategy.  It takes time to dominate organic rankings.  The better your current rankings are, the less time it should take to improve them.  Vice versa, if our current SEO rankings are poor, it could take 12-18 months before we see the needle move towards dominance.  The neat part is, if you do things correct up front, and continue with the things that help us rank more favorably over time, SEO can offset the need for additional marketing dollars for ads or alternative marketing strategies long-term.  


When SEO is done right, assuming there's a large amount of search volume (people looking for our products or services), there's a good chance SEO can be your sole online marketing strategy and produce all the leads and sales you need.  Of course, protecting this strategy with other online marketing avenues is always a recommended best practice too.  

Some of the more common ways SEO can benefit a business include improving your online credibility, targeting specific locations you want to market in, helping your business expand its market reach and communication.  And as far as the business checkbook is concerned, good SEO can decrease your marketing spend, increase your revenue, improve your website traffic, grow new leads, and drive more company sales.
